My collage is titled Black Gender Divide. Focusing on the shared struggles, different battles of Black males and Black females. These categories represent the complex and often painful realities shaping relationships, identities, and expectations within the Black community. I divided the collage into two categories, masculine and feminine, the artwork highlights how Black men and Black women navigate different social pressures while ultimately sharing interconnected struggles. On the left side, the masculine imagery portrays strength, endurance, and survival. The muscular figures show men in suits, and scenes of physical labor reflects the societal demand that Black men remain unbreakable. Labels such as “Survival” and “Absent Father” echo the stereotypes and structural barriers Baldwin discusses in “A Dialogue” how Black men are pushed into emotional withdrawal and forced to navigate a world that views them as threats. Baldwin argues that Black men often live in a state of constant defense, juggling expectations that leave little room for vulnerability or emotional presence. On the right side, the feminine side shows caregiving, emotional labor, and the enduring role of the “Single Mother.” The women shown nurturing children, caring for elders, and supporting one another mirror Giovanni’s reflections in the interview. Giovanni insists that Black women carry a disproportionate emotional burden, often becoming the backbone of the household and community. She challenges Black men to offer emotional partnership, not just financial contribution, revealing the tension between survival and intimacy within Black relationships. In the center, broken chains and the phrase “Shared Struggles, Different Battles” represent the emotional core of the Giovanni Baldwin dialogue: Black men and Black women are shaped by different wounds, yet those wounds are tied to the same system of oppression. The collage visually echoes their debate about love, responsibility, and healing. It argues, as they did, that understanding each other’s battles is essential for unity within the Black community.
